Unlike the CZ, the safety can be operated with the hammer in any position, preventing it from moving anywhere.īecause the pistols were designed using the CZ as a platform, they are very ergonomic and streamlined. Furthermore, the EAA Witness features a rounded hammer that can be half-cocked, just like the CZ. Like the CZ pistols, the slide rides inside the frame on full-length guides, adding to the gun’s accuracy and longevity while also giving it a much lower profile. (But there are polymer and match Witness pistols available, too). The Witness also has a pretty significant beaver-tail, allowing users to hold the gun higher without fear of getting bit by the slide. And where features like the safety and slide stop/release are in the same places. The pistols are all-steel, making them more desirable for those of you who enjoy traditional designs like the Browning Hi-Power or a M1911-platform. And “yes” they can all be converted to fit the different calibers. All the EAA Witness models are based on the same frame, interestingly enough. Besides the popular 9mm variety, EAA Witness pistols also come chambered in 10mm. And circa 1999, the line was imported to the United States by the European American Armory Corporation and marketed under the name “Witness.” So much so, Tanfoglio produced a handful of variants. One of those replicas was the Tanfoglio Force and it quickly gained a very good reputation commercially. The story goes, when the CZ-75 was introduced the design was deemed “secret” by the Soviet Union, so the designers were unable to secure a patent on the design in turn replicas were made by a numerous companies across Europe. The design isn’t just strikingly similar – it’s a clone! The EAA Witness line of pistols is interesting because it is a virtual copy of the ever-popular CZ-75 pistol.

Her family was a high-status Hawaiian clan, and her mother was an advisor to Kamehameha III, who ruled from 1825 to 1862. Liliuokalani was born in 1838 as Lydia Kamakaeha. Her story is inextricably tangled with how the island chain went from a sovereign kingdom to a republic to a U.S. The monarch personally determines the time of abdication, and is succeeded by the next in line to the throne.November 11 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Liliʻuokalani, the last monarch of Hawaiʻi. A tradition has grown up of monarchs relinquishing the throne: King Willem I, Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix have done so to date. AbdicationĪlthough monarchy is for life, the Dutch Constitution makes provision for abdication. The same applied to the marriages of Prince Floris (2005), Prince Pieter-Christiaan (2005), Princess Christina (1975) and Princess Irene (1964). This was the case, for example, in 2004, when Prince Friso married Mabel Wisse Smit. Members of the Royal House in line to the throne also lose their right of succession if they marry without Parliament’s consent. Membership of the Royal House, on the other hand, requires a relationship to the King in the first or second degree. When Prince Willem-Alexander became King, Princess Margriet’s children lost their right of succession, since only those who are relatives of the King in the first, second and third degrees of consanguinity are eligible to succeed to the throne. Members of the royal family who are related to the monarch in the first or Under the Membership of the Royal House Act, the Royal House comprises the The last in line of succession is Princess Margriet. If they could not succeed for some reason, Prince Constantijn, followed by his children, Countess Eloïse, Count Claus-Casimir and Countess Leonore, would be next in line. Next in line after the Princess of Orange come her younger sisters Princess Alexia and then Princess Ariane. If she becomes Queen while still a minor, a regent will be appointed to exercise the royal prerogative on her behalf. Princess Catharina-Amalia, the Princess of Orange, is now first in line to the throne because she is King Willem-Alexander’s eldest child. If no heir can be found within the House of Orange-Nassau, a successor may be appointed by Act of Parliament, which must be passed by both Houses of Parliament meeting in joint session. When Prince Willem-Alexander became King, therefore, the two oldest sons of his aunt Princess Margriet lost their right to succeed. But if the monarch has no children or grandchildren, the throne passes to the descendants of his parent or grandparent, provided they are not further removed from the deceased King than the third degree of consanguinity. If the eldest child has died but has legitimate children, his or her oldest child will succeed. The last revision of the Constitution laid down that the monarch is to be succeeded by his/her eldest child, regardless of whether that child is a son or a daughter. The rules governing succession to the throne are enshrined in article 25 of the Constitution. But those words – words like “fashionable,” “addiction,” and “downstairs” are all commonly accepted words in our vocabularies today! That’s how all the words we use every day came to be: somebody made them up, taught them to other people, people started using them, they became normal. Shakespeare created 422 new English words throughout the course of his career, and none of them were considered to be real words before he wrote them down. Some are just more commonly understood than others. “Wordish” is a word, so long as you understood what I meant by it.Īll words are made-up. So I suppose, to answer our question from earlier, yes. All that matters is that one person can use it with another person and they will both understand the meaning.Ī word is a word when people understand its meaning. It doesn’t matter if it’s been defined it doesn’t matter if there’s a standard spelling it doesn’t even matter if the word is common. But plenty of the generation that created the word understood its meaning perfectly – even those who couldn’t quite define it! As soon as that was true, even before it was popular, it was a word. Plenty of people, when the word first entered popular culture, resisted it’s existence with an almost admirable dedication. A relatively young word, it’s commonly vaguely understood to have something to do with throwing with great force, whether that refers to the act of throwing, being thrown, or even just flying through the air as something does when it been thrown. So if authoritative definition doesn’t make a word valid, what does? What makes a word a word?Ī word is a word if it’s understood to have a certain meaning, even if that meaning isn’t defined or specific. So if by saying “_ isn’t a word,” you mean “_ hasn’t been officially defined,” keep in mind that, if lexicographers (people who make dictionaries) are doing their job right, then the word you’re trying to invalidate will be officially defined soon – if it hasn’t been already – whether you like it or not. It just defines words that have already existed for a while. Because if those words are in circulation, then people need to be able to look up what they mean. But what these people don’t understand is that those words actually need to be in the dictionary for the dictionary to fulfill its purpose. Every year, there is a contingent of people that complain about the addition of new words like “fantabulous” to the dictionary – in 2020, the words “amirite,” “nothingburger,” “janky,” and “ish” were added to the dictionary, and people were comically furious. And that makes sense, because that’s what they exist for! Dictionaries are there so that when you come across a word you’ve never heard before, you can look it up to see what the speaker’s intended meaning was. Dictionary definitions depend on how native speakers use the word, not the other way around. But here’s the thing about dictionary definitions is that they change, and they change all the time. Oftentimes, when we ask the question “is _ a word,” what we mean, whether we intend it or not, is “is _ in the dictionary.” We mean, in one way or another, to ask whether the particular term at hand has been defined either by some authority, or universally enough that it has a common understanding, and the culmination of these two is found in dictionary definitions. Whether it’s between two groups, two generations, or just two friends, there will always be (and basically always has been) plenty of disagreement and argument over whether something is a word.īut why is this? Why do we argue so much about the validity of words? What is it that makes a word “wordish” enough to be considered a word? Is “wordish” a word? In fact, if I were to ask everyone reading this whether or not terms such as “yeet,” “funner,” or even “ain’t” are actual words, there would probably be a considerable margin of disagreement about it. One of the funniest things about the human race, is how much time we spend arguing over whether or not things we say qualify as words. They’ll construct a new extraction area and beam enclosure, then reinstall the Main Injector magnets with a new Fermilab-built addition: kicker magnets to change the beam’s course. Later, when it’s time for the LBNF beamline construction, the accelerator complex will temporarily power down.Ĭrews will move some of the Main Injector magnets safely out of the way and punch into the accelerator’s enclosure. Site prep work starting at Fermilab in 2019 will move some of the utilities out of the way. “It’s in one of the most congested areas of the Fermilab accelerator complex,” said Elaine McCluskey, the LBNF project manager at Fermilab. That’s no easy feat, considering all the utilities, other beamlines, and Main Injector magnets around. Engineers will need to build and connect a new beamline. The first step is to siphon off particles from the Main Injector - otherwise, the circular accelerator will act more like a merry-go-round. A long baseline means that LBNF will send its neutrinos a long distance - 1,300 kilometers, from Fermilab to Sanford Lab - and the neutrino facility means … let’s make some neutrinos. So how do researchers plan to turn Fermilab’s first megawatt beam of protons into the trillions of high-energy neutrinos they need for DUNE every second? This calls for some extra infrastructure: The Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility, or LBNF. The twist? Fermilab’s particle accelerators propel protons - useful particles, but not the ones that neutrino scientists want to study. Particles then enter the Booster Ring for another … well, boost, and finally head to the Main Injector, Fermilab’s most powerful accelerator. This is the first accelerator project in the United States with major international contributions, and it will propel particles to 84% of the speed of light as they travel about the length of two football fields. Work has started for an upgrade to the complex that will include a new linear accelerator at the start of the journey: PIP-II. That’s where Fermilab’s particle accelerator complex comes in.įermilab sends particles through a series of accelerators, each adding a burst of speed and energy. But if you want to make trillions of high-energy neutrinos every second and send them to a particle detector deep underground, you’d be hard-pressed to do it by throwing fruit toward South Dakota. You’ll find them coming in droves from stars like our sun, inside Earth, even the potassium in bananas. Neutrinos (and their antimatter counterparts, antineutrinos) are born as other particles decay, carrying away small amounts of energy to balance the cosmic ledger. The design of the experiment is elegant - produce neutrinos and measure them at Fermilab, send them straight through 1,300 kilometers of earth, then measure them again in giant liquid-argon detectors at Sanford Lab. The detectors can pick up neutrinos from exploding stars that might evolve into black holes and capture interactions from a deliberately aimed beam of neutrinos. At their home 1.5 kilometers below the rock in the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, they’ll be shielded from interfering cosmic rays - though neutrinos will have no trouble passing through that buffer and hitting their mark. More matter inside the DUNE detectors means more things for neutrinos to interact with, and these behemoth neutrino traps will contain a total of 70,000 tons of liquid argon. Because neutrinos are so antisocial, scientists will build enormous particle detectors to catch and study them. To tackle the biggest questions, DUNE will look at mysterious subatomic particles called neutrinos: neutral, wispy wraiths that rarely interact with matter. The experiment brings together more than 1,000 people from 30-plus countries to tackle questions that have kept many a person awake at night: Why is the universe full of matter and not antimatter, or no matter at all? Do protons, one of the building blocks of atoms (and of us), ever decay? How do black holes form? And did I leave the stove on? All three are true for the international Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, hosted by the Department of Energy’s Fermilab. Physics experiments that push the extent of human knowledge tend to work at the extremes: the biggest and smallest scales, the highest intensities. After all, this is the world’s most intense high-energy neutrino beam, so we’re talking about jumbo-sized parts: magnets the size of park benches and ultrapure rods of graphite as tall as Danny DeVito. What do you need to make the most intense beam of neutrinos in the world? Just a few magnets and some pencil lead. First, it’s one of the only prequel and sequels all in one unfolding two stories. Although this one didn’t catch my attention like the original, it is one fine piece of filmmaking. The only movie of all-time that does come close to matching The Godfather, of course, one of the undeniably best sequels ever made, The Godfather Part II. Despite a fairly lengthy running time of nearly 3-hours, it never lags and there is not one minute on screen that isn’t needed or detracts from the story. Add to that an Oscar-winning screenplay by director Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo (based on this novel), and you got a winning formula. I think the reason I loved the movie so much is it’s not an entirely complex story on the one hand (corruption of power) but features so many top notch performances from Marlon Brando to Al Pacino to James Caan and Robert Duvall. However, neither of these examples stacks up to The Godfather and admittedly it would have to be an event for one to do so. Modern cinema has produced many great films, some enticing the fanboy in me ( The Dark Knight) while others are just damn good ( The Shawshank Redemption). If any movie could be called a masterpiece, it would be this. The film captured my attention from the line “I believe in America” to the last show as the door closes on Diane Keaton’s character, Kay as she sees her husband take over his father’s business (and lie directly to her face prior). Watching it for the first time in about five years, the movie had just as much impact as the first time I saw it back in 1995. It’s not my favorite film of all-time, but it is the one movie I consider to be the best and has remained #1 on my list for many years now with no others coming close to supplanting it. This is a “basic” summary of my thoughts on the entire trilogy as a whole, and I do give some insights into each movie.įirst, The Godfather is the movie I measure all other movies against in terms of quality. This portion was copied from my 2008 DVD review and 2020 Blu-ray review of The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, but my thoughts remain the same. At the center of their integrated marketing campaign was a dedicated website made by the movie’s distributors at Artisan Entertainment:. The scares appear more psychological in nature, focusing on intense narrative and overwhelmingly terrifying atmosphere rather than combat. Here are the three key tactics that played a part in the astounding success of The Blair Witch Project. Three student filmmakers march into the woods to make a documentary about a fabled witch credited with a string of murders dating back 200 years. Judging by the trailer, the title’s gameplay elements seem inspired by both the original film and modern horror video games like Outlast and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
